I have been an LPC for the past nine years and a school counselor for fifteen. I have experience helping children and adolescents process big emotions as well as adults struggling with anxiety, self esteem and relationship issues.
My name is Dr. Juila Carter, and I've been practicing psychology since 2014. In addition to my doctorate degree, I am board certified in Behavioral and Cognitive therapy through the American Board of Professional Psychology. I have been serving our nation's Veteran's by working as a psychologist with the Department of Veterans Affairs for over 10 years, and continue to do this full time.
Through my work at the VA I've had the privilege of working with Veterans on issues including PTSD, Anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and relationship concerns. Working at the VA has also afforded me the opportunity to continue learning cutting edge treatment strategies including trauma focused treatments, stress reduction techniques, and DBT skills.
While my primary job has been working with Veterans, I have worked with a variety of individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds and presenting issues. I've helped people with anxiety disorders, depression, trauma history, and adjustment concerns, in addition to personality disorders and over controlled coping styles.
In addition to my clinical work, I engage in research on the cause and treatment of personality disorders, and supervise and teach students at the VA and local university.
When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and kids, and while we are currently pet free, looking forward to getting a dog in the next year. I love being outdoors when it's not the height of TX summer, and enjoy listening to thunderstorms when I get the chance I enjoy reading (Stephen King is my favorite) and watching TV.
I believe that struggles with mental health can make us feel like we’re on the outside looking in — different, misunderstood, or even broken.
Many of the people I work with identify as the “black sheep” in their families or communities — thoughtful, self-aware, but carrying more than they should have to on their own.
My goal is to help you shift how you see those experiences. What feels like a weakness or flaw often has the potential to become a source of strength, insight, and growth.
I specialize in working with people who feel like they don’t quite fit in.
Greetings, I am a therapist in private practice in the Houston, TX area. I am dually licensed as a mental health therapist and an addictions therapist.
